Pharmacological Studies on the water extract of fructus of Lycium chinese Mill

Abstract
The fructus of Lycium chinense has been widely used for it¢¥s hypoglycemic activity, liver protective activity and antipyretic activity. This study was intended to ellucidate it¢¥s pharmacologically active principles, since there were no mentinos about these active compounds in the areas of natural product science.
Before performig these analyses, water extracts were futher fractionated with ether, ethyl acetate and b-buthanol.
To find out the effective fraction, each fraction of 500 §·/§¸ was administered into all experimintal animal models.
Each fraction was administered into streptozotocin induced diabetic rats(45 §·/§¸, i.v, tail) for 10 days.
Serum glucose levels were checked on 3, 5, 7 and 10 day and body weights were checked everyday.
n-Buthanol fraction showde significant hypoglycemic effect from 5th day and maintained to 10th day. Also n-buthanol fraction gained highest body weights compared with other fractions.
Each fraction was administered into CCl_4-intoxicated miuse (0.13 §¢/§¸ P.O.) for 6 days. Measurement of sleeping time induced by hexobarbital sod. (75 §·/§¸, i.p.) indicated that ether fraction showed the most significant liver protective effect. Serum transaminase activity (s-GPT, s-GOT) supported this result.
To find out the fraction which can be shown antipyretic effect, each fraction was given into typhoid vaccine induced febrile mouse(0.2§¢/20g, i.p.) and measured the rectal temperature intermittently. Ether fraction decreased the rectal temperature significantly.
